Eight candidates are up for three open Sarasota County School Board seats in August.

Eight candidates are fighting for three seats up for election on the Sarasota County School Board during a pivotal and occasionally contentious time for the school district.

A change in any of the board’s three members up for re-election could significantly shift the dynamic that has marked board decisions over the past year. Numerous votes have fallen along a 3-2 divide between longtime members Jane Goodwin, Caroline Zucker and Shirley Brown against Bridget Ziegler and Eric Robinson in conversations that have at times become hostile.

From the outside, the board division would not appear to be entirely political. Four of the five board members are Republicans, with Brown the lone Democrat. In Florida, School Board races are technically nonpartisan.
