City Commission selects Jen Ahearn-Koch as vice mayor.

SARASOTA — In her new role as Sarasota’s mayor, former Vice Mayor Liz Alpert will be tasked with navigating the city through a potentially menacing hurricane season, a significant growth spurt and combating the city’s chronic homelessness problem.

Alpert, an attorney elected to the District 2 seat in 2015, was chosen Friday for the ceremonial position by the commission shortly after former Mayor Shelli Freeland Eddie, a commissioner representing District 3, delivered the annual State of the City address at City Hall. Commissioner Jen Ahearn-Koch, elected at-large to the commission in 2017, will serve as vice mayor.
