Right to Clean Water Constitutional Amendment

(presented by the Florida Rights of Nature Network)

In 2020, Orange County voters passed their historic Right to Clean Water Charter Amendment. It granted all Orange County citizens a legally recognized right to clean water, granted all countywaterways the right to exist, flow, and be free of pollution, and it gave citizens standing to take to court those who violat e these rights.
In his presentation, Joseph Bonasia will speak about the current statewide effort to amend the Florida Constitution in similar fashion so that these rights will apply to all Floridians and Florida waters.

He will also discuss the nation’s first Rights of Nature enforcement case happening in Orange County, where a lawsuit has been filed against a developer who proposes building on wetlands, and about the four other proposed environmental amendments to our state constitution

Speaker: Joseph Bonasia

A retired teacher, Joseph Bonasia now serves as Vice-Chair and SWFL Regional Director for the Florida Rights of Nature Network and as Citizens’ Climate Lobby’s legislative liaison to Senator Rick Scott’s office. (Read some of his articles about Rights of Nature and climate legislation here: https://www.theinvadingsea.com/author/joe-bonasia.

He is also a founding board member of the SWFL RESET Center, which focuses on resetting human impacts on global warming and ecological systems through education, advocacy, and action.
