Status of Elections and Democracy

Speaker: Tom Tryon

Mr. Tryon shares his insight and perspective on the status of elections and democracy, drawing on his 39 years in local journalism.

Tom Tryon, born and raised in Manatee County, spent his entire 39-year with the Sarasota Herald-Tribune. He began as a police reporter in 1981, writing his first stories on an upright Underwood typewriter and finished as editor of the opinion pages, working on computers with software he barely understood. He retired in November 2019 because a year in journalism, particularly during the last decade, was the equivalent of seven years. Tom misses one part of his job the most: interacting with engaged citizens.
