Background Information:
As a nonprofit dedicated to empowering voters with the tools and information they need to cast their ballots, the League has hosted candidate debates since its founding in the 1920s. The League of Women Voters became a household name in the mid-twentieth century as the award-winning sponsor of the US’s first televised presidential debates.
While the League walked away from the national presidential stage in 1988, its core mission never changed. Today, thousands of state and local chapters of the League of Women Voters continue to host thousands of nonpartisan candidate forums every election cycle. These events remain a vital component of local political races across the United States.
The core guidelines governing LWV candidate forums are structured around neutrality, equal treatment, and voter education. The League of Women Voters adheres strictly to these guidelines and makes every possible accommodation to allow all candidates to participate.
