The vote followed a protest from a local activist group
SARASOTA — In a 4-1 vote Tuesday, the Sarasota County School Board denied the charter school application for Pinecrest Academy Gulf Coast, following a protest from local activist group Protect Our Public Schools and a hearing of citizens.
The charter school had been proposed to serve 800 K-8 students in the Palmer Ranch area and would have been run by a Miami-based nonprofit organization. In its application to the School Board, Pinecrest Academy said it would be opening seven other charter schools in the next two years.
At the meeting on Tuesday afternoon and in previous discussions, several School Board members voiced their concerns about Academica, a company that would help manage the school’s academics.
