LWV SRQ comments to state legislators on home rule

Editor’s Note: Carol Hartz, LWV SRQ president, will address Sarasota County’s state legislators on home rule Jan. 28.

Good morning. I’m Carol Hartz, president and gun safety chair of the League of Women Voters Sarasota County. The League is a nonpartisan organization which encourages informed and active participation in government. The League supports strong home rule for counties and municipalities.

The League has spoken twice before the Sarasota City Commission to request a non-binding resolution supporting a ban on semi-automatic weapons in Sarasota. Our City Commission has declined twice to issue a non-binding resolution because of pre-emption statutes. The League asks that our municipal representatives be empowered to ensure our constitutional right of safety, free from the fear of semi-automatic weapons.

The League opposes statutory pre-emptions on single-use plastics. In 2008, the Florida Legislature became the first state in the nation to block local governments from banning plastic bags. Our beaches, our landfills, and our tourist economy are affected by single-use plastics. The League asks that our municipal representatives be empowered to ensure the health of our local environment.

The League asks that the Sarasota City and County Commissions, which represent our citizens at the local level, operate under strong home rule and be empowered to keep us healthy and free from fear.
