Jon Thaxton moderates a forum on water quality with Sandy Gilbert, Chairman/CEO of START (Solutions To Avoid Red Tide), Steve Suau, and David Tomasko.
Sandy Gilbert is a graduate of Cornell University with a BA in economics. His career spanned thirty-five years in the publishing business with TIME and Smithsonian Magazines where he traveled all over the world working with advertising clients on their marketing programs.
He and his wife, Emmy Lou, retired to Longboat Key in 2000 where he encountered his first red tide bloom and joined START soon thereafter to help find solutions to mitigate its harmful effects on the environment and the economy. In 2010 he was named Chairman of the organization with its five hundred members around the state. Some of the START endeavors accomplished under Sandy’s aegis include the PBS TV documentary film “Guardians of The Gulf”, the distribution of PSAs to local TV stations alerting the public to impending red tide blooms, the fostering of the award-winning Gulf Coast Oyster Recycle and Renewal Program (GCORR) in Manatee County and he was a founding member of the Sarasota Bay Watch, and a contributing partner in their ongoing effort to seed clams in Sarasota Bay.iCal
