Holiday Lunch - Teen Court: a Sarasota League of Women Voters Legacy
"If you are going to live, leave a legacy. Make a mark on the world that can't be erased.” - Maya Angelou, author.
In 1986 the Sarasota Chapter of the League of Women Voters approached the
Junior League of Sarasota, Inc. with concerns that the community was
experiencing an increase in juvenile crime. Two year later, Teen Court of Sarasota,
Inc., a 501 (c)(3) organization, was incorporated and the first Teen Court hearings
were held in December, 1988. By 2011, 52 Florida counties had an active Teen
Court program based on the Sarasota model.
Today hundreds of youth are referred annually to receive supportive programs.
These include group and one on one mental health counseling, Life Skills and
Substance Abuse classes, Court Session (Justice for Youth, by Youth and CAMP
X-RAYD for the most at risk youth.
Please join us to hear more about the valuable role Teen Court has played in
many lives and in the community at large. A LWVSRQ Legacy lives on.
Speakers: Heather Todd, Executive Director and Katy McBrayer-Lynch, President Board of Directors and former Teen Court participant
