Sarasota County is entering an election season like few others in recent memory.
Not only are there a pair of congressional races that could be highly competitive, but four of the six legislative seats covering parts of Sarasota County are likely to have no incumbent on the ballot, and five of the six seats should have hotly contested races.
The sheer number of competitive local races is unusual. Term limits and an unexpected resignation are playing a role in the turnover, but a vacancy at the top of the region’s political pyramid is the most significant factor.
